Shipping Dangerous Goods by Ocean
A tremendous amount of dangerous cargos are shipped by ocean vessels throughout the world. A single accident could cause loss of lives, damage to the environment and cargo resulting in law suits, heavy fines and damage the company’s reputation. To protect lives and the environment, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has instituted strict regulations governing the transportation of dangerous goods by sea.
The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships. It is responsible for the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. The IMDG code is intended to provide for the safe transportation of hazardous materials by vessel, protect crew members and to prevent marine pollution. This internationally recognized code is the basis for regulating sea transport of hazardous materials. The latest revision of the IMDG Code (35-10)
Specifies that effective January 1, 2012, IMDG Code training is mandatory for all shore-based personnel involved in dangerous goods transported by sea.
