Shipping Dangerous Goods by Ocean Training


A tremendous amount of dangerous cargos are shipped by ocean vessels throughout the world. A single accident could cause loss of lives, damage to the environment and cargo resulting in law suits, heavy fines and damage the company’s reputation. To protect lives and the environment, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has instituted strict regulations governing the transportation of dangerous goods by sea.

The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships. It is responsible for the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. The IMDG code is intended to provide for the safe transportation of hazardous materials by vessel, protect crew members and to prevent marine pollution. This internationally recognized code is the basis for regulating sea transport of hazardous materials.The latest revision of the IMDG Code (34-08) Specifies that effective January 1, 2010, IMDG Code training is mandatory for all shore-based personnel involved in dangerous goods transported by sea.


Personnel who perform these duties MUST be trained in the IMDG code:

  • Classify dangerous goods and identify Proper Shipping Names of dangerous goods
  • Pack/unpack dangerous goods
  • Mark, label or placard dangerous goods
  • Load/unload Cargo Transport Units
  • Prepare transport documents for dangerous goods
  • Offer, accept, carry, handle dangerous goods for transport
  • Prepare dangerous goods loading and stowage plans
  • Load/unload dangerous goods into/from ships
The 3-day course covers:
  • General requirements for shippers and carriers
  • How to use the “Dangerous Goods List”
  • Classification of dangerous goods
  • UN specification packaging
  • Marking, labeling, placarding, documentation of dangerous goods
  • Requirements for packagings construction and testing
  • Marine pollutants, limited quantities, N.O.S proper shipping names
  • Segregation of incompatible materials
Upon completion of the course and successfully passing the examination; the participants are awarded an IMDG Certificate of Training as required by Chapter 1.3.1.2.5 of IMDG.

The Instructor:


 Mr. Terry Guo is an expert in transporting dangerous goods, he worked in several Sino-US vessel and harbor technical exchange programs and he is also certified by the Chinese government and holds the IATA’s Dangerous Goods Instructor certification to train for Dangerous Goods Transportation by Air. He served as panel organizer and speaker on several technical summit conference of the Dangerous Goods Transportation field. In the past few years, Mr. Guo was also active with China’s Dangerous Goods Transportation proposal preparations on ICAO and UN committee for Lithium Battery transportations.

Mr. Guo served in expert advisory board of CATA (China Air Transport Association) and the board of advisors for the Sino-US Transportation Safety Institute. In United States, Mr. Guo is the member of the DGAC (Dangerous Goods Advisory Council) and the member of the COSTHA (Council on Safe Transportation of Hazardous Articles).

The examination:


  • The examination is open-book, students may use any reference materials they wish.
  • The examination comprised of true/false questions, multiple choice questions and fill-in questions.
  • Students have 2 hours to complete the examination.
  • The passing grade is 75%.

Training Cost:4700 RMB
Including training material, original regulation Xerox version using fee, 3-day lunch, morning/afternoon tea and IMDG Exam & Certificate.
